The Columbia River Wetlands stretch 150 km in length and range from 1-2 km in width. The Wetlands are designated as a Wildlife Management area and are protected from development. The seasonal water fluctuates about fourteen feet flooding marshes and back channels, changing the habitat and appearance from dry flats with wintering elk, to an everglade appearance with birds dominating. The Columbia River and its Wetlands offer an array of activities such as boating, canoeing, hunting and fishing. It is not unusual to spend a day or two on the Wetlands without seeing another person. Drift down the slow moving channel and let the quiet, tranquil environment penetrate you to the soul. Bird watching in the Columbia River Wetlands begins each year with the "Wings over the Rockies" event.
